Whether you just unboxed your first sewing machine or you have been hand-sewing for years and are ready to step up, these fundamentals will save you hours of frustration and set you up for beautiful results from the very start.

1. Always press your seams

An iron is your second most important tool. Pressing seams as you go gives your garment a professional, clean finish that no amount of careful stitching alone can achieve.

2. Read the pattern fully before cutting

Spend 20 minutes reading every instruction page before touching your fabric. Surprises mid-project are rarely good ones.

3. Buy extra fabric

Add at least half a yard to any fabric requirement. Mistakes happen, grain lines get misread, and a little extra gives you breathing room.

4. Use the right needle for your fabric

A ballpoint needle for knits, a sharp for wovens, a microtex for silks. The wrong needle causes skipped stitches and snags.

5. Staystitch curved edges

Before handling any curved neckline or armhole, staystitch just inside the seam allowance. This stops the bias from stretching out of shape.
